Finding a Source of Water Leaks When You Don’t See Water

Do you think you have a water leak but you don’t see anything obviously leaking? This is actually a pretty common problem. You may not even know you have a leak until you get a water bill and it’s a lot higher than it was before. Well, you need to find that leak even when there are no obvious signs.

Follow These Steps to Find Your Water Leak

With a little trial and error, you should be able to zero in on the location of your water leak.

Step One: The first thing you should do is go out to the city water meter by the street. Take the lid off and on the water meter there’ll be a little cover that you lift off sometimes to clean the glass on the water meter. Under that lid, there’s usually a small red triangle on the face of the meter. That little triangle shows if water is moving through your system. It’s very sensitive. If there’s a leak and water is flowing when it shouldn’t be, that little triangle will be spinning.

Step Two: Let’s say the triangle is spinning. Now you know that water is flowing. What can you do to isolate where this leak might be? If you have a water shutoff valve in your house, go shut that valve off. Then go back out and see if the triangle stopped spinning, indicating that the water flow has stopped. If it’s still spinning, that tells you if the leak is between that shutoff valve and the water meter.

If that’s the case, you need to find the spot in your yard where the grass is a lot greener and doing a lot better than everywhere else. That’s a good sign that there’s a leak right there. Call a plumber and get that leak dug up and repaired.

Step Three: If you turn off that shutoff valve, and the leak stops (meaning that the triangle stops spinning), then what should do is turn that valve back on. Go to your hot water heater and look on top of it. There’s a shutoff valve there. Close off the water supply and then go look at the triangle again. If it stopped, that tells you there’s a leak on the hot water side. If the leak is in your slab, you’ll need to get a plumber or a water leak detection company that specializes in spotting leaks.

Step Four: If you have a crawl space, now is the time to crawl underneath your house and see if you have a swimming pool accumulating in the crawl space. Once you get to this point, you need to call a plumber or a water leak detection company that specializes in spotting leaks.
