Today, I want to explain why it’s important to have your furnace serviced at least once per year by a professional.

Why Your Furnace Needs Routine Service

Old furnaces, meaning over 10 years old, need yearly maintenance to keep them in good working order. Your furnace could be a forced-air furnace, a wall furnace, or a radiant heat furnace that’s in your floor. These need to be serviced routinely. It’s important to get these things serviced to make sure there are no problems. But the main reason you want to have a professional inspect your furnace is to do a thorough check for carbon monoxide. If a furnace gets a crack in the firebox, or if the venting is not vented correctly, it will put carbon monoxide in your house.

Symptoms and Risks of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Carbon monoxide is odorless and tasteless. You can’t sense it until you start experiencing symptoms like: feeling a little nauseous or sleepy, just not feeling good in general, or you have persistent headaches. These are all possible symptoms of carbon monoxide in your house. And yes, too much carbon monoxide can and will kill you. If you don’t get it handled right away, you go to sleep one day and you don’t wake up. It is serious, and we treat it as such.

How to Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

It’s very important for everyone to have a good carbon monoxide detector in their house. But you also want to make sure it’s working. Some of them run on batteries, and some you simply plug into an outlet. Those are the ones that I recommend because you won’t forget to change the batteries, it just plugs right into an outlet. They don’t cost very much, they’re about the same price as a smoke alarm. In fact, there are some smoke detectors that now also detect carbon monoxide. It’s very important that you have some kind of carbon monoxide detector for safety.

But it’s also good to have a professional check out your furnace to make sure it’s operating correctly. My team will make sure the burners are clean and that there’s a right size orifice. If the furnace is not adjusted for the height of your elevation where you live, it doesn’t burn clean. And if it doesn’t burn clean, it’s not nearly as efficient. That’s something we can take care of. More than anything else, it’s important to have these things checked by a professional for your and your family’s safety.
